Exploring Korean Neighbourhoods: Myeong-dong

Welcome back to the Exploring Korean Neighbourhoods series! I know it has been a while since the last part of the series, but I am finally back with a new post. Today, I will be talking about Myeong-dong. Many of you who have travelled to or plan on travelling to Korea probably have heard of Myeong-dong. It is a popular tourist district and a must-visit for all shopping lovers. Although Myeong-dong is mainly a commercial district right now, it used to be a residential district. Myeong-dong’s history dates back to the Joseon dynasty, although back then, it was called Myeongryebang. Today, Myeong-dong is loved by locals and tourists alike.

As mentioned, Myeong-dong is known for being every shopping lover’s dream. There are an endless array of shops, from Korean beauty product stores such as Etude House to more niche shops, such as Honey Butter Almond Friends (they have the best-flavoured almonds!). Myeong-dong also has a huge (multiple floors!) Olive Young, which is like a Korean version of Sephora. If you’ve read some of my other blog posts, you’ll know I LOVE Olive Young. Besides street shops, Myeong-dong has many department stores, such as Lotte Department Store and Shinsegae Department Store. If you visit Korea in wintertime, I highly recommend you check out the Shinsegae Department Store at night, as they are famous for having an excellent Christmas light display outside.

Besides shopping, Myeong-dong also has some of the best street food. When evening approaches, you will see food carts lined up along the street, selling all sorts of delicious Korean snacks. There is even a separate street dedicated to the popular Korean combination, Chimaek (chicken and beer). Furthermore, located in Myeong-dong is the famous Myeong-dong Kyoja. This Michelin-star restaurant specializes in Korean dumplings and hand-cut knife noodles. They also serve some of the best kimchi I’ve had. Even though Myeong-dong Kyoja is a Michelin-star restaurant, prices are very low, making it extremely popular. When you go, be prepared for a long lineup. However, I highly encourage you to try this restaurant out. It is indescribable.

Myeong-dong is also known for the beautiful Myeong-dong Cathedral. This place is a must-see for all tourists. Like Shinsegae, the Myeong-dong cathedral also has a wonderful light display during Christmastime. Another famous place in Myeong-dong is the Myeong-dong Nanta Theatre. Nanta is a non-verbal comedy show, the longest-running theatrical performance in South Korea. If you are looking to experience Korean theatre, you should definitely check out this place.

I hope you enjoyed reading today’s blog post! Hopefully, you were able to learn a little more about Myeong-dong, Seoul’s famous tourist district. If you visit Myeong-dong, do give some of the recommendations a try. You won’t regret it.
